The Scented Kitchen: The Recipe That Made Dinner Memorable—And It Wasn't Just the Potatoes

There is something beautiful about a home that welcomes people before a single word is spoken.

Sometimes it's the aroma of dinner slowly cooking in the kitchen. Sometimes it's fresh flowers on the table. And sometimes it's the gentle fragrance that greets you the moment you walk through the front door.

Recently, friends of ours were preparing for a four-month mission trip to Kenya. With only a few weeks to get ready, our community quickly rallied around them. One family organized what may have been the most delicious fundraiser imaginable.

The husband is known locally for his incredible smoked meats, and he recruited several other talented pitmasters to help prepare smoked brisket, chicken, salmon, and more.

Naturally, we couldn't resist.

We ordered four pounds of brisket and four pounds of chicken. Instead of deboned chicken, we ended up with two beautifully smoked whole chickens—a happy surprise that made dinner feel even more special.

Better yet, dinner for the next evening was practically finished before the day had even begun.

Knowing we'd be coming home tired after a long summer day, I wanted everything else to feel just as welcoming.

The house was cleaned that morning, the table was ready, and before we headed out, I took one last look around the living room.
