Where Shall We Go? Travel Fresh, Stay Responsible!

As I sit here looking out at the thermometer on my deck—reading 15° with the sun shining brightly—I can’t help but dream of somewhere warmer. I’ve realized that while I enjoy the change of seasons, winter isn’t my favorite. Thankfully, in Southwest Missouri, bitterly cold days are rare. Still, this weather has me reminiscing about a Florida getaway that warmed my soul and refreshed my senses—a trip where we not only enjoyed new places but also learned about the small ways we can be mindful travelers.

A Winter Escape and a Fresh Start

One winter, we decided to drive to Florida with a couple of friends. It was a long trip, but with four drivers and our trusty Drive Time® Aromables® car vent air freshener in the Cottony Fresh scent, we were set. The fragrance, with its notes of lemon, lime, green apple, jasmine, and lavender, was the perfect companion for our road trip. Its clip-on design made it convenient, and it created a calming atmosphere in the car as we drove.

We started our journey with excitement, fueled by the refreshing scent that filled the car. By the time we reached Clearwater, the scent had mellowed, but it had already done its job of setting a delightful tone for our trip. As I reflect on that trip, I also think about how easy it is to overlook small, everyday items like air fresheners when it comes to being responsible with waste.

The Charm of Indian Rocks Beach

Arriving at Indian Rocks Beach, we settled into a charming house we had rented through VRBO. It was just across the street from the beach and perched on stilts, with parking underneath. The house itself was quirky—it felt as though someone had just moved out, leaving behind personal items like a man’s valet stand complete with a watch and belt. Even the liquor cabinet was fully stocked (though everything had been opened). It felt like staying in someone’s home, and we couldn’t help but laugh at the oddity of it all.

The proximity to the beach more than made up for the unusual accommodations. While the guys went on a fishing charter, we girls explored the Indian Rocks Beach Nature Preserve. This shaded boardwalk winds through mangroves, offering glimpses of manatees and other wildlife. It’s a serene spot and well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Exploring and Dining by the Water

One of the highlights of the trip was dining at Jimmy Guana’s Waterfront Restaurant. We sat outside, soaking up the view of the inland waterway as boats glided by. The seafood was exceptional. David and I both chose the blackened Grouper sandwich, while our friends tried the Ocean Harvest BLT and the Mahi Mahi Island Tacos. Every bite was a reminder of why we love coastal vacations.

A Day at EPCOT

From Indian Rocks Beach, we took a day trip to EPCOT. The park’s blend of innovation and culture captivated us. David enjoyed the science and technology exhibits in Future World, while I loved the World Showcase, where you could immerse yourself in different cultures without leaving the park. The monorail made it easy to navigate the sprawling 305-acre park, and we left with memories of both learning and laughter.

How to Responsibly Dispose of Car Air Fresheners

While we enjoyed the Cottony Fresh scent during our trip, it got me thinking about what happens to air fresheners after their scent fades. With sustainability in mind, here are some tips for disposing of car air fresheners responsibly:

  • Paper-Based Air Fresheners: These can usually be composted if they’re made from biodegradable materials and don’t have synthetic coatings or finishes. Check the packaging for composting information.
  • Plastic and Clip-On Fresheners: These often contain plastic components that aren’t recyclable curbside. Instead, look for specialized recycling programs that accept mixed materials or plastic parts.
  • Gel and Liquid Fresheners: Empty the liquid or gel into the trash—never down the drain—and recycle the plastic container if possible. Clean it thoroughly before placing it in the recycling bin.
  • Reuse When Possible: Some air fresheners come in reusable containers that can be refilled with new fragrance pads or essential oils. This reduces waste and extends the product’s life.

Making Eco-Friendly Choices

As travelers and everyday drivers, small changes in our habits can make a big difference. Choosing air fresheners made from sustainable materials or those designed for reuse helps reduce waste. Being mindful of how we dispose of these items ensures we’re doing our part for the environment.

Final Thoughts

That winter trip to Florida reminded me of how small joys—like a comforting fragrance—can elevate any journey. From the Cottony Fresh scent that set the tone for our road trip to the sunny beaches and cultural adventures, every moment was enhanced by an atmosphere of freshness and fun. By pairing these experiences with responsible choices, like proper disposal of air fresheners, we ensure that our adventures leave a positive mark on both our memories and the planet.
