We know how essential oils and pleasant aromas can improve our mood, but in my experience, bad smells have just as much ability to put me in a bad mood as good smells have to put me in a good mood.
You know what I mean? When the kitchen trash smells super ripe, or the car has been sitting in the hot sun and baking in the dirty sock stench, or you accidentally leave rotten food in the fridge and have to clean it out...Yuck.
When I smell something stinky like that, it just puts me in a bad mood. Taking the garbage out is one of my least favorite chores because of the stench. If my car smells, I feel like I end up smelling musty when I drive it. When I’m traveling, if my shoes are smelly in my bag, they make all my clothes smell bad, and it puts me in a bad mood for my whole trip.
Being in a bad mood disrupts everything in my life: how I connect with others, how I handle stress, how I am able to do my job, etc. I’m a writer, and the ability to think creatively is necessary for my job. But when I’m in a bad mood, I have a hard time being creative. An article titled, “Do scents affect people’s moods or work performance?” from Scientific American describes the correlation between odor, mood, cognition, and behavior:
Downstream from how odors influence our moods is the way that moods influence how we think (cognition) and how we act (behavior). In terms of cognition, mood has been shown to influence creativity with the typical finding that people in a positive mood exhibit higher levels of creativity than individuals in a bad mood. Odors can also produce the same effects. When people were exposed to an odor they liked, creative problem solving was better than it was when they were exposed to an unpleasant odor condition.
